La Revista Argentina de Cardiologia cumple 90 años
In 2024, the Argentine Journal of Cardiology turns 90 years old. Created in 1934, three years before the Argentine Society of Cardiology was founded, the Journal was the Society's official scientific and dissemination publication from the start. It is noteworthy that, contrary to what might be expected, it was not the Society that decided to launch the Journal, but rather the Board members of the Journal, authors and co-authors, who founded a Society. This just reflects the enormous drive and the vision of those outstanding men of our national cardiology. And, since then, the Argentine Journal of Cardiology has been the permanent place for publishing basic and clinical research, review and opinion articles and for discussing ideas. Over the years we have all felt the desire and pride to publish here.
But it is not easy or free. Keeping the Journal active and maintaining a standard of quality that is constantly being improved involves the work of many people, from the active search for material, the careful checking and correction of texts, statistical analysis, references and figures, to the accurate translation into English to provide a more universal content, and the tireless administrative task to comply with the regulations. When we compare what we initially received with the final result we deliver, which must satisfy authors, ourselves and readers, we feel that the job is done.... only to have to start again the next day, or the same evening, to prepare the next issue.
All our work is meaningless without senders and recipients. We are merely the transmission medium. And that is why we never tire of thinking about how to enhance the appeal of the Journal for each one. We understand the work at the Journal as an act of service and dedication. We want a better Journal because that means a better Society and a stronger national cardiology. And despite being 90 years old, the Argentine Journal of Cardiology remains young, fresh, and embellished. In addition to the advances mentioned by Carlos Tajer in his editorial, I would like to point out that we have recently added HTML to our traditional PDF format for improved visual presentation, introduced color to our publications, redesigned and updated the of editorial policies and developed our own website (rac.sac.org.ar), which is user-friendly and navigable, facilitating wider dissemination of our content. All these requirements have been demanded by the evaluators in order to meet the criteria to be indexed in MEDLINE. All the members of the Journal team, the Society's directors and the Society as a whole are motivated by the desire to be included in MEDLINE, which has been a long-awaited goal. For years, all those who have served on the Editorial Board (Oliveri, Doval, Tajer, Borracci, Pomés Iparraguirre, Trainini, Lowenstein, Arias, Lucas, Díaz, and many others) have worked tirelessly towards this goal. And so does the current Committee, from Claudio Higa, the Deputy Director, to each of the Associate Directors and members, with the irreplaceable help of Patricia López Dowling, the editorial coordinator, and the designers and translators always committed to their task. We hope that in the next presentation we will be able to achieve it. Effort and dedication have not been lacking.
Personally, working for so many years at the Journal allowed me to initially enter with awe, and over time, to become part of a circle of cardiologists whom I admired, with whom I could talk and exchange ideas, allowed me to learn about different disciplines, and, above all, made me feel useful. That is why I always saw the Journal as my place in the enormous space of the Society. Happy birthday!
