The different pathogenic theories are reviewed and gathered into ethiopatogenic mechanisms of multiple factors which comprises: the effect of the so-called risk factors (specially hypercholesterolemia, lipoperoxides, hypertension and smoking); injury of the endothelium, the role of monocytes, the role of platelets, the role of smooth muscle cells of the arterial wall; mitogenic factors, endothelial colagen matrix synthesis and thrombus formation. The onset and sequence of the development of the atherosclerosis is highlighted as well as the role of the different pathogenic factors involved.
