During the last few years there has been a large number of investigations in search of new markers of myocardial injury. Among these markers, cardiac troponins have stood out because of a high sensitivity and specificity in the diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction in patients with chest pain. It's prognostic value in myocardial infarction and it's usefulness in non-invasive detection of reperfusion after thrombolysis, have also been studied, with varied results. In patients with non-"Q wave coronary syndromes, the presence of highlevels of cardiac troponins also identifies a population at higher risk for the development of major cardiac events, during short and medium term follow-up, which makes these markers useful in the risk stratification of this group of patients.
