Atheroesclerosis constitutes the main cause of morbidity and mortality in diabetic patients. In these patients myocardial infarction is more prevalent and with more complications and worse short and long term prognosis, specially in women. In this epidemiologyc approach we analize the relationship between diabetes and coronary heart disease, considering the effects of diabetes, hyperglucemia and hyperinsulinemia in the development of atheroesclerosis and thrombpsosc The amount of vascular disease in these patients is not totally explained by the higher prevalence of risk factors for coronary heart disease.
