Abstract

Background

To assess the mortality of patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass.

Method

We designed a 21 item score that included parameters regarding situation before, during and after surgery. The patients evaluation was made at the moment of postoperatory room admission and 12hours later.

Results

The study included 662 patients. We observed that the mortality in patients with a score of 21or more was greater than in the group with 20 or less. Non urgency patients with a score of 20 points or less had a mortality of 1.7% and those with more than 20, 36% (p < 0.00001). For urgency patients with 20points or less the mortality was 5.9% and in patients with more than 20 was 45.5% (p < 0.01).

Conclusions

The new score was very useful to evaluate mortality in cardiovascular immediate post-operative patients.
